Lakewood Hospital

Project Description

The Lakewood Hospital project began as a straightforward asbestos and hazardous material abatement and demolition effort. Located in the bustling city of Lakewood, OH, the site posed unique challenges due to its expansive footprint spanning four city blocks, bordered by busy streets, an active clinic, a major highway, and residential neighborhoods. These constraints required meticulous planning and execution to minimize disruptions.

To address these challenges, Safeco implemented comprehensive dust control plans, reviewed daily, alongside 24/7 seismic monitoring to ensure public safety and mitigate nuisances. Following the demolition phase, Safeco transitioned to earthwork, stabilizing the site in preparation for future construction. This phase included the removal of footers and walls, the installation of sediment ponds with a pump system, and fine grading across the entire site.

During the earthwork phase, Safeco encountered an unexpected challenge: a volatile and carcinogenic chemical, tetrachloroethylene (PCE), was discovered in the site's drainage system, a remnant from the hospital's past operations. Safeco promptly collaborated with the City of Lakewood, DLZ, and Buckeye Elm to remediate the hazardous material, ensuring the site's safety for future development.

Through innovative solutions and seamless teamwork, Safeco successfully overcame obstacles while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community.
